A Miami company most South Floridians have never heard of just became one of the most valuable startups on the planet. OpenEvidence, the AI-powered clinical search platform headquartered in the city, closed a $250 million funding round this week that values the company at $15 billion — up from $12 billion back in January. The round was led by hospital systems together with venture firm Andreessen Horowitz.
Founded in 2022 by Daniel Nadler and Zachary Ziegler, OpenEvidence built a tool that helps physicians quickly pull up and interpret medical research at the point of care, cutting down the time doctors spend digging through journals for answers. The company has been described as the fastest-growing application for physicians in its category, and it has now raised more than $1 billion over the past year alone, drawing backers that include Thrive Capital, Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, GV and Nvidia.
The news matters locally for a few reasons. OpenEvidence isn’t a satellite office of a Silicon Valley company — it’s headquartered in Miami, which continues to make the case that the city can be home base for serious, capital-intensive tech companies and not just a landing pad for finance and crypto firms relocating from up north. The company is also pushing beyond search: it recently partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to build oncology tools, and it plans to file its first drug candidate for clinical trials before the end of 2026, with several more expected in 2027. A separate partnership with AI company Anthropic will bring its clinical decision-support tools to physicians in nearly 100 low- and middle-income countries.
For Miami’s broader business community, stories like this add momentum to the narrative that’s been building for a few years now: that the city’s tech and healthcare-innovation scene is maturing past its early hype phase into companies with real revenue, real partnerships and real valuations. That’s good news for everyone from commercial landlords to local vendors and service providers who benefit when a $15 billion company keeps hiring and growing here instead of decamping for Boston or the Bay Area.
