South Florida’s startup ecosystem just posted its strongest quarter in recent memory. According to a new report from PitchBook, cited by Refresh Miami, companies across the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro raised roughly $1.14 billion across 117 deals in the third quarter of 2026 — up sharply from a revised $876.65 million in the second quarter.
The surge pushes the region’s year-to-date total past $3.14 billion, putting 2026 on pace to top last year’s numbers. Nationally, South Florida ranked sixth among U.S. metros by deal count and tenth by total deal dollars, with financial services and medtech leading the sector breakdown. The average deal size climbed to $9.8 million, up from $8.5 million the prior quarter.
Miami-based companies accounted for much of the activity. Fintech startups Split Pay and Flex closed rounds of $100 million and $70 million, respectively, while Miami-based AI startup Physical Superintelligence raised $58 million and therapeutic device maker RapidPulse brought in $48 million. Travel tech firm TravelX and compliance software company Comp AI also landed sizable rounds. The quarter’s biggest deal came from OpenEvidence, a medical AI company that relocated to Miami from the Boston area in 2025, which raised $250 million at a $15 billion valuation.
Not every signal was bullish. PitchBook’s Nizar Tarhuni noted that “the real story sits on the exit side, where the IPO pipeline keeps slipping further out,” and NVCA’s Bobby Franklin pointed to capital increasingly concentrating among a smaller group of large firms, making it harder for emerging managers to raise their next funds. Still, local fintech Securitize’s $1.25 billion public debut earlier this year is one sign the ecosystem is maturing enough to produce real exits, not just big rounds.
For Miami’s broader small business community, the ripple effects of this kind of investment activity are worth watching — more funded startups means more local hiring, more demand for office space and services, and more potential customers and partners for the businesses that support them.
